Automated ID scanning is a broad area. It covers everything from checking the age or name on a person’s ID to conducting complex analyses of identity documents to verify whether they are real or fake.

ID scanning is a form of smart data capture. Scandit’s ID scanning software captures data from identity documents using a combination of text recognition (or optical character recognition/OCR), barcode scanning and image recognition. This data can also be instantly analyzed, securely on-device, to determine if the ID is authentic.

Businesses use the scanning and validation results to enable real-time decision making, large-scale workflow automation and compliance with industry regulations.

For example, frontline workers can be given an instant age calculation from the extracted date of birth and/or guidance on whether an ID is real or fake. Or you can upgrade your website with self-serve options for customers to validate their IDs before airport check-in or package deliveries.

Our ID scanning software runs on any smart device with a camera, including smartphones, tablets and dedicated scanners. It comes in two flavors:

There are two major ID scanning tasks you can complete with Scandit’s ID scanning software: accurately capturing ID data (ID Scan), and detecting fake IDs (ID Validate).

1. Accurately capture ID data (ID Scan)

ID Scan uses barcode scanning, OCR and image recognition to transform the printed data on a physical ID into a digital format.

Supported documents

We support over 2500 documents worldwide by capturing data from a variety of different sources on IDs, including PDF417 barcodes, Machine Readable Zones (MRZ), Visual Inspection Zones (VIZ) and identity photos.

Scandit supports not just current but older versions of IDs – important, because an ID can be valid for up to 10 years. The software can also detect voided IDs — IDs with punched holes or cut corners, indicating they are no longer valid.

Scan accuracy rates and parsing extracted data

Scandit has industry-leading scan accuracy rates.

• 100% scan accuracy rate for IDs with PDF417 barcodes
• 99% accuracy rate for IDs with Machine Readable Zones (MRZ)
• 95% accuracy rate for Visual Inspection Zones (VIZ), with 100% accuracy for the date of birth field

The data is then organized into a form that is easy to read, easy to store and easy to query. Scandit’s software also provides a high-quality image of the scanned ID, for easy additional checks in situations where an additional layer of verification by a human is sometimes required.

2. Detect fake IDs (ID Validate)

ID Validate takes the hundreds of characteristics extracted from an ID and analyzes them to check for forgery errors in order to verify if an ID is real or fake. ID Validate has 99.9% ID authentication accuracy.

Designed for practicality and scalability, our fake ID detection capabilities are ideal for time-pressured and customer-centric workflows such as last-mile delivery and car rentals. The process takes only 1 second, works offline, and results are available instantly on any smart device.
