Why choose Scandit barcode scanning software?

Scandit barcode scanning software is built for businesses needing an advanced barcode scanning solution that adapts to their users, physical environments, and unique workflows. Whether it's inventory management, in-store order fulfillment, last-mile delivery, healthcare, or an edge case you've never seen before, our software can handle it.

Our technology leverages the computing power and high-resolution cameras in today’s smartphones and tablets, applying AI-powered, advanced barcode decoding algorithms for unmatched efficiency and accuracy.

We quickly pivoted back to say, look, this is something we want to partner with Scandit on to make sure we build something that’s specific for our associates and solves our business needs.

The Scandit AI Engine

The Scandit AI Engine is the intelligence behind the Scandit Smart Data Capture Platform, powering our barcode scanning, ID scanning, and ShelfView products. It's designed to automate complex tasks performed under changing conditions and provide real-time insights that match users' needs.

AI is used to solve four critical scanning challenges:

  1. Avoiding unintentional scans: AI analyzes the full camera scene to distinguish the target barcode from background codes, which helps prevent unintended captures.
  2. Selecting barcodes in dense environments: AI detects when many barcodes appear close together and automatically enables a visual overlay to help users select the right one—it's smart enough not to guess for you.
  3. Handling damaged or unreadable barcodes: When a barcode is too damaged or degraded to decode reliably, AI falls back to optical character recognition (OCR) and extracts the human-readable text instead.
  4. Filtering duplicates: AI tracks barcodes across frames to separate intentional duplicate scans from accidental re-scans.

Think of an order picking process, where a retail associate searches shelves in a dimly-lit room for hard-to-find items. Through AI-supported data capture, your app can find the exact items faster and display augmented reality overlays to pinpoint their physical locations on-screen.

Batch scanning and AR

Scandit software is designed to scan multiple barcodes simultaneously without processing delays, draining battery life, or forcing users to rescan items.

Scandit’s AI Engine tracks every barcode in view across frames and maintains accuracy even when labels are small, curved, damaged, or captured on lower-quality mobile cameras.

Combined with Scandit's AR features, users get real-time on-screen insights to make smarter decisions about which tasks to perform next.

Consider high-volume workflows where workers must count and verify every item correctly, including items with the same SKU, in a limited timeframe—this is where Scandit software excels.

Our underlying technology combines computer vision (CV), AR rendering, and UX logic to improve the batch scanning experience in these ways:

  • Parallel decoding with low latency: The Scandit AI Engine’s CV models use algorithms optimized to rapidly interpret millions of pixels to decode multiple barcodes at once without slowing the user down.
  • Reliable duplicate handling: Identifies and tracks each barcode uniquely across frames, which supports accurate counting and reduces false positives—even when items share the same barcode data.
  • Persistent tracking through motion: Remembers barcode positions in space as the camera moves, even when labels go outside the field of view.
  • Adaptive performance in real conditions: Compensates for blur, glare, poor lighting, curved surfaces, label damage, and lower-resolution camera hardware.
  • Stable AR guidance: Keeps visual overlays anchored to physical items with no delays or flickering, improving usability and user confidence.

Automated barcode and text extraction

Many enterprise labels contain more than one barcode, along with printed text, such as dates, weights, prices, batch numbers, and serial numbers. Standard scanning approaches force users to treat these as separate elements and manually tell their app what each one means.

Scandit's Smart Label Capture helps users scan these labels faster and with fewer errors. Leveraging the Scandit AI Engine, it combines barcode decoding, text recognition, and semantic understanding into a single capture flow that interprets the label and all its elements.

Knowing the meaning of each element, it also returns the exact fields required by your app, structured in a way that's understandable by your backend systems. This reduces manual reviews, rescans, and downstream data errors.

Smart Label Capture provides these benefits:

  1. Mixed data capture in one step: Read multiple barcodes and printed fields together from a single label.
  2. Contextual understanding: Extract only the label elements necessary for a use case, such as product information, IMEI numbers, and serial number for retail electronics, or unit price and weight for weighted items.
  3. Better workflow accuracy: Returns structured output that helps teams act on label data faster and with fewer mistakes.
  4. Less application-side parsing: Reduce the need for developers to build custom logic to infer which label element value belongs to which back-end data field.

How enterprise teams deploy Scandit solutions

Here are some examples of how teams use Scandit solutions to upgrade their barcode scanning capabilities:

  • Teams using traditional dedicated barcode scanners: The Scandit AI Engine, combined with our flexible integration options, makes switching to low-cost consumer devices fast and easy. For example, you can deploy AI-powered barcode scanning with just a few lines of code using Scandit SparkScan.
  • Teams scaling up barcode scanning volume: MatrixScan speeds up batch scanning and reduces errors across different workflows, including stock taking (MatrixScan Count), in-store order picking (MatrixScan Find), and inventory counting (MatrixScan Batch).
  • Teams wanting to improve productivity: Rather than taking several steps to scan a complex label, Smart Label Capture extracts multiple barcodes and text elements at the same time. For example, you can automate price and promotion checks, or scan vehicle identification number (VIN) stickers with fewer errors.

We evaluated scanning products from about six vendors, and Scandit's Web SDK demonstrated overwhelmingly superior performance. It achieved scanning capabilities on par with native apps.

How to integrate Scandit software

Scandit software supports three integration paths, allowing teams to match deployment speed to technical requirements:

  1. Scandit Express provides a no-code option that injects scan data into existing apps on existing devices with no software changes.
  2. Pre-built components, such as SparkScan, MatrixScan Find, and MatrixScan Augmented Reality, give teams a faster way to add optimized scanning and AR-assisted workflows to mobile or web apps with minimal implementation effort.
  3. Custom SDK integrations for teams that need full control, supporting bespoke barcode scanning, multiple barcode workflows, AR experiences, and Smart Label Capture across a wide range of platforms, frameworks, and enterprise systems.
